X, formerly known as Twitter, has recently released its
first transparency report since undergoing a major rebranding. The report,
which covers the first half of 2024, provides valuable insights into the
platform's approach to content moderation under Elon Musk's leadership. While
some expected a more relaxed stance on moderation, the data reveals a complex
picture with both notable changes and surprising consistencies.
One of the most significant findings is that X suspended far
fewer users for hate speech compared to the previous year. In the first half of
2024, only 0.004% of reported hate speech incidents resulted in account
suspensions, a stark contrast to the 111,000 profiles suspended for hateful
conduct in 2022.
Despite the drop in hate speech suspensions, X has taken
more enforcement actions overall. The platform suspended 5.2 million accounts
and removed 10.7 million posts for rule violations in the first half of 2024.
These numbers exceed those reported by Twitter in the first half of 2022, when
6.6 million posts were removed, and action was taken against 5 million
accounts.
The increase in overall enforcement actions may be
attributed to X's increased reliance on automation due to a reduced workforce.
This approach has led to a more binary view of violations, with accounts being
suspended more readily instead of being asked to remove content as was
previously done.
X's transparency report also highlights the platform's
increased focus on child safety and combating deceptive entities. In the first
half of 2024, X suspended over 2 million more accounts for child safety
violations compared to 2022. Additionally, around 400,000 more "deceptive
entities" faced suspension during the same period.
However, the report also reveals that X is taking less
action against suicide and self-harm content, with only 2,000 suspensions in
this category compared to 11,000 in 2022.
In terms of legal requests, X received 72,000 legal action
requests in the first half of 2024 and complied with 70% of them. This marks an
increase from the 53,000 legal requests received by Twitter in 2022 and the
43,387 in 2021. The compliance rate has also increased from the previous 54%.
While Elon Musk has made public statements opposing certain
government orders, the data suggests that X is actioning more legal requests
than before.
