TikTok has recently shared its latest EU audience and
staffing numbers as part of its DSA disclosure reporting. The report, which
covers the period between January and June 2024, provides valuable insights
into the platform's moderation efforts, user growth, and overall performance in
the region.
This is TikTok's first report that covers a full six-month
period, following two previous DSA reports that covered shorter timeframes. As
such, this update offers a more comprehensive account of TikTok's activities in
the EU.
During the reporting period, TikTok removed almost 22.2
million pieces of content, with "Sensitive & Mature Themes" being
the primary driver of removals. "Regulated Goods and Commercial
Activities" and "Mental and Behavioral Health" were the second
and third most significant contributors to content removals, respectively.
Interestingly, TikTok actually removed less content per
month compared to the previous reporting period. While not a direct comparison
due to the different time spans, this reduction in overall removal numbers
could be an element to monitor in the future.
TikTok received the most user reports regarding
"Illegal Hate Speech," followed by "Privacy Violations" and
"Sharing of Non-Consensual Intimate Images." In response to these
reports and other violations, TikTok banned over 5.3 million accounts during
the reporting period.
To handle the growing moderation needs, TikTok has increased
its dedicated moderation staff in the EU. As of the end of June 2024, the
platform had 6,354 people focused on content moderation in the region,
representing an increase of 67 moderators compared to the previous report.
TikTok's user base in Europe has reached 150.5 million
monthly active users, marking an increase of 8 million users compared to the
last report. While not growing at a rapid pace, TikTok's user numbers in the
region are steadily rising over time.
Germany, France, Italy, and Spain are TikTok's key EU
nations, each boasting over 20 million users. Globally, TikTok's top usage
regions include the U.S., Europe, Indonesia, Brazil, Mexico, and Vietnam, which
together account for 70% of the platform's billion-user audience.
