Threads, the messaging app created by Meta, recently rolled
out an expanded saved posts feature allowing users more flexibility to bookmark
and revisit content. The update underscores Threads' ongoing efforts to enhance
the user experience and better compete with other social platforms.
Previously, Threads only allowed basic likes and shares of
other users' posts. The new saved posts option gives individuals a way to flag
any post within the app that they want quick access to later on. This is done
through the three dot menu found at the top of each individual update. Once
saved, the content becomes accessible through the profile page alongside other
bookmarked items.
According to Meta CEO Adam Mosseri, saved posts was one of
the most commonly requested features from the Threads community. While tested
exclusively with select daily users until now, the rollout suggests it was well
received.
However, Mosseri has noted that growth in functionality may
have limited effects on overall engagement. He believes attracting new users
and cultivating reach within the existing network will be more impactful long
term.
Nonetheless, continuously optimizing the Threads experience
remains a focal point. Other proposed expansions mentioned by Mosseri include
social bookmarks for topics of interest, customizable lists, trending topics
overviews, and post editing tools. Keeping committed users engaged is half the
battle for any platform, and new options help Threads compete for screen time
against entrenched rivals.
Threads has made capturing sports fandoms and celebrities a
priority aim. Curating authentic conversations between fans and their favorite
athletes or stars could introduce the app to large niche audiences. This comes
as Twitter faces uncertainty following its acquisition by Elon Musk. Musk's
tumultuous leadership and hands-on approach to content policies have caused
distrust among some users.
However, migrating communities from Twitter presents
difficulties due to its longtime standing. Competing platforms also battle for
mindshare and market dominance. While Threads grows step-by-step, it remains to
be seen if Meta's vision can disrupt the social media status quo. Upcoming
elections may prove a make-or-break test if trust in Twitter continues eroding.
